Around 200 people were given an opportunity to have their say about what they would (and wouldn’t) wish to see in their local Sports Centre. With support from The Glasshouse, a national charity working to help people make better buildings, spaces, homes and neighbourhoods, everyone was able to indulge their creative side and think about how the building might look. In addition, a scale model of the site was available, allowing folks to think through the possibilities of how to fit everything into the building space. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of blue sky thinking….! The event gave everyone a unique opportunity to feel part of the proposed development.

The Board of Directors were on hand to answer the many questions posed and were delighted by the enthusiasm and support evident throughout the day. New members and volunteers were recruited. Yvonne Birnie, Vice-Chair of ASC, was quick to point out that she had never doubted the support of the local community but said “I was thrilled by the support we got on the day. Local families came along and everyone joined in enthusiastically. It was a very successful event.”

On 26th February we invite everyone to come along to the Peregrine Suite at MAHR and have their say on how they want their new centre to look and feel and the types of activity you hope will be catered for in the Centre.

This will be a fun event. Bring along the kids: their input is welcome too.

ASC Chair, Kelley Miller, stood down at the August 2011 Board meeting.  Kelley has given huge amounts of support to the project and will be sadly missed for her thoughtful and informed inputs at meetings.  Come back any time Kelley – you’ll be most welcome.

Caledonian 100 report in paper

A big thank you to the 15 volunteers who helped with event registration & course marshaling for the Caledonian 100 (www.caledonian100.com) on the first weekend in October.

It was a great effort by the team of volunteers, who braved some bracing weather & an early morning start on the Saturday to raise approximately £1,500. The event participants really appreciated the support & encouragement of our volunteer team.

Around 100 people, in teams of 4, walked 100km across the Cairngorms, starting in Aviemore at 8am on Sat morning and finishing in Braemar on Sunday lunchtime. There are some great photos of the event, which can be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/caledonian100.

If you missed your chance to volunteer this year, don’t fret – the event is happening again on the last weekend in September 2011 & we hope to be involved.

Group who took part in ASC Golf Event

ASC’s first fundraising event was a Big Hit.

A golf tournament was held on Tuesday 21^st September 2010 on the spectacular Spey Valley Championship Golf Course, which has been recently voted one of the best in Scotland by Top 100 Golf Courses in the World.

Seventy-nine golfers booked to play and amazingly 79 golfers hit Spey Valley’s fairways and more amazingly the weather was in suppot too with the day of the competition being the only dry day in nearly two weeks.

The event raised over £1100 pounds; £790 was raised directly from the £10 donation and £200 was raised from the “Bunker Fines” imposed by our Financial Director and the remainder will be collected from Gift-Aid.   These funds mean that ASC can move forward with plans to buy branded merchandise for sale through our website to assist us with further fundraising efforts.

The field was made up of golfers from all Badenoch and Strathspey golf clubs, local businesses entering a team and others travelled from Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Airdrie, North Berwick and Oxford.  We really appreciate the support given to ASC’s first fundraiser and a great day of social golf was had by all.

ASC really appreciated the support of all those who helped make the day the great success that it was and special thanks to local businesses who very generously supplied prizes, these were:-

The Retreat, Aviemore Hand Wash, Cairngorm Brewery, Cairngorm Mountain, G2 Outdoor, Happy Haggis Restaurant, Smiffys Fish Restaurant, Walkers of Aberlour and Dalwhinnie Distillery and thanks also to:-
